Une biochronique littéraire

Connu comme le « découvreur » d’Émile Nelligan, Louis Dantin (pseudonyme d’Eugène Seers, 1865-1945) est aussi le critique le plus important des années 1930 au Québec et le mentor de nombreux écrivains de l’époque. Voici la biographie de cet homme hors du commun, qui s’appuie principalement sur son impressionnante correspondance (environ 2 500 lettres) et ses études critiques (plus de 400). Par cette biochronique littéraire, qui suit la piste chronologique d’un dialogue entre les faits et les œuvres, on découvre le parcours remarquable, souvent bouleversant, de l’élève surdoué, du père du Très-Saint-Sacrement marginal, de l’éditeur clandestin d’Émile Nelligan et du défroqué exilé à Boston – où il passera l’essentiel de sa vie (1903-1945). Ses amantes, ses relations avec les Noirs, ses prises de position socialistes, ses polémiques et son rôle de passeur de la littérature américaine s’amalgament à une lecture de son œuvre pour donner un portrait saisissant d’un écrivain fasciné à la fois par la figure du Christ et par le corps de la femme : « Ton corps est la chapelle où j’adore et je prie »… Au-delà de la notoriété du critique, cet ouvrage vise à faire connaître Louis Dantin au plus près de lui-même, traçant les lignes de force entre les événements de sa vie et de son œuvre littéraire.
