Dénoncée comme la part maudite mais nécessaire de l’urbanité, la prostitution est dépénalisée en 1791. Dépassant les fantasmes et les préjugés qui trop souvent résument l’histoire de la prostitution révolutionnaire, cette immersion dans le monde des prostituées et de ceux qui ordonnent leur activité interroge le rapport entre le moment révolutionnaire et l’activité prostitutionnelle. Que fut la prostitution au tournant des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, alors que sonne le glas des grands bordels de l’Ancien Régime ? Quel rôle la Révolution a-t-elle joué à son égard ? Sa dépénalisation a-t-elle constitué une révolution ? Explorer cet angle mort de la recherche redonne vie aux modes d’existence des prostituées, met au jour les origines des politiques contemporaines de la prostitution et exhume un moment de l’histoire de la citoyenneté encore largement méconnu. Dans cette enquête où se côtoient femmes publiques, « honnêtes citoyens », policiers et hommes de loi, la prostitution révèle les frontières morales du projet révolutionnaire et propose une autre histoire de la sexualité en Révolution. Cette histoire est celle d’une libéralisation paradoxale de la prostitution qui façonne les contours d’une catégorie de «citoyennes diminuées» dans la cité républicaine.
