Alors qu’il étudie le droit, Pierre Perrault, né en 1927 au Québec, préfère déjà le dialogue aux tribunaux. Pris par l’envie d’écrire et d’arpenter son pays, il devient rédacteur et auteur pour la radio. En 1959, il découvre l’Île-aux-Coudres, ses habitants et la capacité du magnétophone à fixer le réel tel qu’il cherche à le rendre : brut, dénué de toute fiction. Pierre Perrault invente ainsi – en même temps que Jean Rouch – le « cinéma du vécu », dans la lignée du cinéma direct de Robert Flaherty.Pour la suite du monde, son premier long métrage, est sélectionné à Cannes. Il y réorganise l’ancestrale pêche au marsouin et filme la transmission des gestes et de la parole. Tout le cinéma de Perrault est déjà là : retrouver le véritable être québécois dans une action concrète et défendre son histoire. Suivront une quinzaine de longs métrages amoureux de la terre et des hommes, poétiques et politiques.De 1980 à 1994, Simone Suchet a mené une série d’entretiens avec le cinéaste. De l’enfance aux films, la parole enflammée de Perrault raconte une histoire du Québec déchiré entre ses langues et ses cultures. Au fil des récits de tournage, des rencontres et des influences artistiques, c’est un discours politique qui prend forme, dans la mouvance des revendications indépendantistes des années 1960-1970 et de la défense du Québec francophone. Amoureux écorché des hommes et de la nature, réaliste comme nul autre, Pierre Perrault est un activiste poétique.
