Né esclave dans la colonie française de Saint-Domingue en 1762, des amours d’un fugitif normand, le marquis de La Pailleterie, et d’une esclave, Césette, le magnifique Thomas-Alexandre devient général en chef durant la Révolution sous le pseudonyme d’Alexandre Dumas. Droit sur ses étriers, sabre au clair, bravant les préjugés, assumant sa sensibilité, le général Dumas mène à la victoire ses soldats de l’an II dans le Nord, les Alpes, les Pyrénées, en Vendée, en Belgique, en Italie, au Tyrol et en Égypte. Mais pour Bonaparte, qui lui voue une haine tenace parce qu’il a contrarié ses ambitions, c’est un rival. Et sa couleur de peau n’arrange rien. Dans une épopée qui inspirera ses plus célèbres pages au fils du général, l’écrivain Alexandre Dumas, le héros est soutenu par sa femme qui l’attend à Villers-Cotterêts et par l’amitié de trois intrépides et sympathiques compagnons qui pourraient bien être les modèles d’Athos, Porthos et Aramis. Pour Anatole France, c’est « le plus grand des Dumas ». Sa vie est « un chef-d’œuvre auquel il n’y a rien à comparer ». Solidement étayée par des archives inédites, l’histoire vraie de ce d’Artagnan républicain est plus époustouflante, plus romanesque encore que les plus palpitantes fictions de son illustre fils.
