Jeune Américaine expatriée en France, Mary Louise Reynolds (1891-1950), entraînée dans le cercle des surréalistes, devient une artiste reconnue à la pointe de l’avant-garde et s’engage dans la Résistance en 1941. Veuve de guerre, la belle Mary débarque dans le Paris des années folles qui swingue au son du jazz et ferraille autour de Dada et du surréalisme. Du Dôme à Saint-Germain-des-Près, du Jockey à l’emblématique Bœuf sur le toit, Mary règne sur les nuits de la capitale et se lie avec Henri-Pierre Roché, Constantin Brancusi, Man Ray, Peggy Guggenheim, Jean Cocteau, André Breton et, surtout, le séduisant Marcel Duchamp dont elle s’éprend. Friande d’esthétisme, l’époque la conduit à la reliure d’art et ses réalisations, recherchées par une clientèle exigeante, rivalisent d’audace et d’humour. Alors que la France est à la merci des nazis, Mary entre dès mars 1941 dans la Résistance aux côtés de Gabrièle Picabia. Mais le réseau est donné : Mary échappe de peu à la Gestapo et, après une folle épopée, regagne clandestinement les États-Unis. Rentrée à Paris après-guerre, elle dirige une revue d’art, avant de s’éteindre, frappée par la maladie, veillée par Duchamp. Christine Oddo nous restitue dans un style alerte et limpide cette histoire d’amour et d’art.
