Il est un thème qui traverse ce livre. C’est la Révolution. « La Révolution est fixée aux principes qui l’ont commencée ; elle est finie ! » disait Bonaparte au lendemain du 18 Brumaire. Elle n’en continuera pas moins son travail de sape et de recomposition sociale. Sous la Restauration qui consacre le retour des Bourbons, de Louis XVIII à Charles X, et trouve sa légitimité dans le vieux droit divin tout en inventant l’un des régimes les plus libéraux d’Europe, on se repose la même question : comment terminer la Révolution ? Elle a été le fil rouge de cette époque. Elle habite tous les débats et tous les milieux. En enfermant la nation dans l’État, en la laïcisant à marche forcée, elle a créé une situation unique, une sorte d’exception française. Avec elle, tout est devenu politique et logiquement, tout s’est mis à tourner autour d’elle. On l’a cherchée partout, dans l’étude du passé, dans les mœurs nouvelles, dans ses mythes et dans ses lois, dans la reprise de ses combats et dans la consolidation de ses acquis. Elle ne s’achève pas sous la Restauration, au contraire. Au contact de cette dernière, elle donne tout son sens à ce que sera le XIXe siècle et à ce que sont encore un peu aujourd’hui nos habitudes et nos comportements.
