Pourquoi Louis XVI et Marie-Antoinette ont-ils mis sept ans à consommer leur mariage ? Fruit de longues années de recherches, en France et à Vienne, où se trouvent des archives inédites, réalisé avec le concours d’une équipe médicale, cet ouvrage éclaire de façon crue la question, irrésolue depuis deux siècles, du mariage de Louis XVI et Marie-Antoinette. À la vision d’un roi un peu benêt et manipulé, voire impuissant, se substitue une version fidèle aux faits. À la fin des années 1760, la monarchie est affaiblie et le duc de Choiseul voudrait devenir à la mort du vieux Louis XV une sorte de « maire du palais ». Il entend se servir de l’une des filles de Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche, Marie-Antoinette, qu’il a mise dans le lit du dauphin et qui, croit-il, régnera sans partage sur l’esprit du jeune homme. Une fois célébré, le mariage dégénère pourtant en une lutte politique forcenée. Le Tout-Versailles et bientôt le peuple s’interrogent sur l’exécration du mari pour sa femme et sur la haine de celle-ci pour un conjoint qui la dédaigne. Le futur Louis XVI est en réalité un monarque manipulateur qui veut sauver une royauté en perdition et se sert avec sang-froid des rares armes qu’on lui a laissées. On est loin de l’affaire d’alcôve souvent évoquée, mais de plain-pied dans la « grande histoire ». Une démonstration implacable dont les éléments s’emboîtent comme les pièces d’un puzzle.
