Il n’y a pas de cinématographe sans cliché, il n’y a pas de cinéphilie sans objet film culte – d’où le choix de la Dolce Vita en couverture de cet opus. Avant que l’eau puisée dans « l’hollywood sul tevere » baptise le chef-d’œuvre absolu de Federico Fellini, le cinéma italien, tel un astre clair-obscur, avait atteint de nombreuses apogées et connut sa révolution (au double sens astronomique et historique, cf. Rome, Ville ouverte de Roberto Rossellini). Les valeurs sûres du néoréalisme ont laissé la place à des signatures qui surplombent encore le cinéma italien d’aujourd’hui. Il faut donc saluer l’immense travail de Mary P. Wood. Mieux qu’une cartographie scolaire des différentes étapes et/ou récifs qui trament l’histoire d’une cinématographie complexe, l’auteur invente de nouveaux repères : succédanés américains, « filones », peplums, porno soft, horreur, intrigues politiques, divas et divos, producteurs démiurges et acteurs-icônes (Alain Delon doit son statut de star autant à Luchino Visconti et Michelangelo Antonioni qu’à Jean Pierre Melville, et Clint Eastwood, salué aujourd’hui comme le meilleur réalisateur américain, doit sa gloire universelle à la trilogie western de Sergio Leone) et s’immerge totalement dans cette entreprise fleuve. Des décors-monuments de Cabiria aux productions sur mesure de Sacher films, entreprise de production – réalisation – exploitation artisanale de Nanni Moretti, en passant par les épopées bertolucciennes, sans oublier la figure du diable et de ses antennes satellites, cet essai exhaustif cadre définitivement son sujet et raconte l’histoire passionnante de celles et ceux qui non seulement ont vogué sur le navire « e la nave va », mais continuent d’irriguer la fontaine de Trevi.
