La Presse sous le Consulat et l'Empire (1799-1814)

Cette étude de la presse française de 1799 à 1814 décrit en première partie à côté de la presse parisienne, la presse provinciale et celle des pays annexés, et exploite en deuxième partie les documents conservés aux Archives nationales sur les entreprises de presse et leurs budgets. La troisième et dernière partie étudie d’une part l’organisation de la censure à Paris et dans les départements, et de l’autre la propagande, domaine où l’empereur est passé maître et n’a pas de rival en Europe. On connaît l’influence des Bulletins de la Grande Armée ; Napoléon n’hésite pas à écrire anonymement dans le Moniteur, sait utiliser les dépêches diplomatiques, manie avec art la fausse nouvelle et les fausses dates. Malgré la censure et la propagande officielle, la presse a, en fait, amélioré son organisation et maintenu ses tirages, ce qui explique la rapidité de sa renaissance après 1815.
