Brève histoire du peuplement européen en Nouvelle-France

La Nouvelle-France, pays de cocagne ? Cela semble incroyable. Cependant, de tout l'empire français aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, elle est la colonie qui a exercé le plus grand pouvoir de rétention sur les Français qui y sont débarqués sur une base temporaire. Environ la moitié de ces derniers ont choisi d'y demeurer de façon permanente, conquis par les conditions de vie favorables qu'elle offrait. C'est l'approche innovatrice du peuplement de la Nouvelle-France que propose Robert Larin dans le livre Brève histoire du peuplement européen en Nouvelle-France. Afin de conserver le Canada, symbole de sa puissance politique et économique, la France se devait d'y établir des habitants permanents. Or, elle n'a consacré que fort peu d'efforts à l'organisation d'un mouvement durable de colonisation. Cependant, le Canada s'est tout de même peuplé. Robert Larin offre dans son ouvrage une double explication à ce phénomène. Dans un premier temps, la colonie a largement bénéficié du pouvoir de rétention qu'elle a exercé sur de nombreux militaires, engagés et commerçants y étant venus pour un temps limité. Ces hommes visaient alors un même objectif : y trouver un bénéfice personnel. Dans un deuxième temps, le peuplement s'est consolidé grâce à l'accroissement naturel de la population. Un des points forts de cet ouvrage est de replacer la colonisation de la Nouvelle-France dans le contexte plus large du peuplement de l'Amérique. Robert Larin a l'originalité d'établir des rapports fort intéressants entre le peuplement de la Nouvelle-France et celui des colonies britanniques, de l'Amérique latine et de la Guyane.
