L'importance du monde américain a pourtant été capitale pour l'auteur des Choses, livre-témoin de l'apparition en France des études de marché à l'américaine. Perec a en effet accompli cinq voyages outre-Atlantique, pour des raisons de relations publiques, liées aux traductions des livres et aux colloques universitaires, mais aussi pour des motifs amicaux et même sentimentaux. Perec en Amérique offre une description vivante de ces passages américains, pour en reconstruire le contexte et les enjeux. Ce retour à des sources totalement inconnues est l'occasion de faire le portrait des communautés intellectuelles que faisaient naître d'intenses contacts entre artistes et intellectuels des deux bords de l'Océan. S'appuyant sur une documentation souvent inédite et une connaissance très fine de l'écriture perecquienne, Jean-Jacques Thomas offre également une lecture très stimulante de la réception de l'œuvre de Perec en Amérique, mais aussi de l'influence déterminante de la culture américaine sur son écriture, avant et après son entrée à l'Oulipo.
