« À la fin du Cours Préparatoire, tous les élèves doivent être en possession de tous les outils du savoir-lire ». C’est la conviction de Pierre Muckensturm, praticien de l’école, philosophe du savoir. En quatre chapitres, il fait le point : Qu’est-ce qu’apprendre ? Qu’est-ce que lire ? Qu’est-ce qu’apprendre à lire ? Comment travailler en classe ? Très au fait de l’état des connaissances, il nous présente ce qu’on sait des mécanismes cognitifs. Avant d’insister sur l’essentiel : apprendre à lire c’est acquérir un savoir-faire, comme apprendre à nager, coudre, skier etc. C’est pourquoi les élèves doivent se plier à un apprentissage rigoureux, passer et repasser par des exercices et progresser pas à pas vers le but. Ce qui paye à la fin, c’est le travail régulier et méthodique que l’élève aura accompli en étant dirigé et encouragé tout au long par un guide qualifié, maître dans l’art de transmettre le savoir-lire. En bon instituteur, l’auteur termine sa dernière classe par une leçon d’espérance : tous peuvent lire et de foi : donc ils doivent savoir lire. Mais, pour que tous nos enfants accèdent à ce savoir, il faut faire le choix de l’exigence, du chemin qui les mène aussi à la liberté. C’est affaire de volonté collective et de courage…
