Culte de soi-même » selon Baudelaire, « culte de la différence dans le siècle de l'uniforme » selon Kempf, le dandysme apparaît dans les mondanités parisiennes dès 1815. Jeunes messieurs dépensiers et provocateurs, affichant des tenues coûteuses et excentriques, les dandys recherchent la distinction dans l'esthétisation du quotidien. Les artistes et les écrivains vont suivre. Ce sera le dandysme littéraire. Pour Balzac, Sue, Musset et jusqu'à Proust, l'originalité du costume va de pair avec l'exaltation du rôle de l'artiste. S'élevant contre ce qui opprime l'individu, les écrivains dandys protestent contre la mentalité matérialiste de leur temps. Analysant le discours littéraire sur le dandysme produit au long du XIXe siècle, Karin Becker retrace le phénomène et ses évolutions jusqu'à la « Belle Époque », et éclaire une posture qui a tenté – et tente encore – nombre d'écrivains.
