Du « Tigre » Clemenceau aux éléphants du Parti socialiste, des « corbeaux » catholiques à l'insulte de « chien » lancée à George W. Bush lors d'un déplacement en Irak (décembre 2008), du coq français à l'ours russe... la métaphore animalière ne manque pas d'atouts pour qualifier et disqualifier les « bêtes » politiques qui nous gouvernent, les élites sociales, religieuses et culturelles, ou même incarner les États et encore les partis. La caricature, imprégnée de culture populaire, religieuse puis savante, inflige à ses ennemis les pires régressions animales, puisant dans un vaste bestiaire des arguments souvent à charge. Depuis la nuit des temps, la pensée humaine, métaphorique par excellence, interroge son rapport au règne animal pour mieux se définir. Dans cette quête ontologique, la bête permet souvent de dénigrer l'autre, l'adversaire, l'ennemi, de lui dénier toute humanité. Depuis Lucas Cranach jusqu'à André Gill, Sennep, Siné, Charb ou Plantu, une multitude de dessinateurs a trouvé dans la bestialisation caricaturale une rhétorique impertinente et parfois injurieuse pour mettre en scène, de manière fascinante et brillante, les tensions politiques et sociales.
