Petit journal satirique né sous la Restauration, Figaro utilise la langue du théâtre pour critiquer le pouvoir tout en échappant à la censure. C'est Hippolyte de Villemessant qui en fait, à la fin du XIXe siècle, le grand quotidien de la bourgeoisie. Sous cette identité, le titre traverse le XXe siècle, de l'assassinat de son rédacteur en chef par Mme Cailllaux aux joutes littéraires de François Mauriac et Raymond Aron, en passant par un entre-deux-guerres troublé par les ambitions de François Coty. Seul grand journal de droite subsistant après l'Occupation, Le Figaro triomphe alors sous la direction de Pierre Brisson. C'est avec la mort de ce dernier qu'il entre en crise, tout comme l'ensemble des quotidiens français dans les dernières années du XXe siècle. Le Figaro fêtera bientôt ses deux siècles d'existence : comment ce titre mythique a-t-il traversé les époques ? Quelles ont été les grandes plumes du journal ? Comment a-t-il été le seul quotidien français à survivre aux deux guerres mondiales ? C'est à ces questions, parmi d'autres, que tente de répondre ce premier ouvrage collectif sur le plus ancien journal français. Historiens, chercheurs en littérature et en sciences de l'information mêlent ici leurs approches pour nous révéler toutes les facettes de cette publication.
