Les frères Lumière n'ont pas inventé le cinéma, c'est l'Américain Thomas Edison, dont l'ingénieur Laurie Dickson tourne le premier film en 1891. Comme il est né muet, le cinéma a dû trouver son propre langage. En moins de vingt ans, les cinéastes ont mis au point une grammaire spécifique qui va permettre à leurs films d'être vus et compris par des spectateurs du monde entier. Aujourd'hui, c'est toujours la même grammaire qui est utilisée, l'arrivée du parlant ne l'a nullement périmée, et pas davantage les autres avancées techniques. Le cinéma moderne emploie de la même façon que Georges Méliès l'arrêt de caméra, la surimpression et les fondus, et tout comme les Anglais de l'école de Brighton le hors-champ, le champ/contre champ, le plan subjectif, le passage au flou ou la diagonale du champ, de même qu'il manie les cadrages, les panoramiques, le ralenti, le plan débullé ainsi que les travellings et la plongée à la manière des Américains, la musique et l'image par image tel le Français Émile Reynaud, les actions parallèles comme le génial David W. Griffith. Au total sont recensés dans cet ouvrage unique en son genre 29 points de grammaire dont les combinaisons multiples donnent les innombrables figures de style qui caractérisent le talent des cinéastes. Cette Grammaire du cinéma est composée en deux parties. La première retrace comment les cinéastes ont inventé les 29 points de grammaire et la seconde étudie comment ils ont développé les points de grammaire de 1909 à aujourd'hui, et comment ils en redécouvrent la force dans des utilisations nouvelles. Se côtoient aussi bien Hitchcock, Godard, Sergio Leone, Welles, Eisenstein, Kubrick, Fritz Lang, que Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Clint Eastwood, Ang Lee, Peter Jackson, David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan, Spielberg... Dans le livre, outre les nombreux films primitifs que l'on peut voir maintenant en DVD, sont étudiés ou cités environ 160 films de 1909 à nos jour.
