Après la fusion Vivendi-Universal et le bouleversement des programmes en clair de Canal +, Le Vrai Journal de Karl Zéro fait figure d’émission-phare de la chaîne cryptée. Plébiscitée par les 15-35 ans, l’émission se signale par un anticonformisme qui lui vaut quelques soucis avec le CSA et l’Élysée. Par le mélange de sketches « réalisés avec trucages », de reportages internationaux et d’interviews en langage « jeune », elle construit une nouvelle représentation de la politique censée plaire à un public d’adolescents et de jeunes adultes. Hommes et femmes de pouvoir s’y pressent, forcés de se soumettre aux questions de Karl Zéro. Personnage controversé, contesté au sein du milieu journalistique, diversement aimé à l’intérieur de la chaîne, Karl Zéro est devenu en quelques années un médiateur incontournable de la vie politique. Son succès, au-delà des anecdotes qui l’accompagnent, témoignent de mutations plus profondes qu’il n’y paraît de la vie politique et médiatique française. Cet ouvrage montre comment et par qui est conçue l’émission. Il analyse la vision du monde et de la politique qu’elle développe et les raisons de son succès public. Enfin, il étudie les mutations que connaît aujourd’hui la représentation du politique à la télévision, dont Le Vrai Journal est à la fois un facteur et un symptôme.
