Remodelant cette image d’Épinal, Pierre Daix propose de montrer la complexité du personnage en quatre études, mêlant biographie et relectures. Aragon avant Elsa dessine, à partir de textes récemment révélés, le cheminement difficile du jeune homme vers le parti communiste, entre rencontres amoureuses et conflits avec le groupe surréaliste. Aragon et la peinture examine, de manière inédite, ses interventions sur la peinture, notamment sur Picasso – qui n’échappe pas au prisme du réalisme communiste – et sur Matisse – qui, lui, fera toujours exception. Enfin, Aragon et Paul Nizan et la Relecture de la fin des « Communistes » jettent de nouveaux éclairages sur les crises politiques de la guerre de 39-40 et l’ébranlement de l’engagement d’Aragon.
