Il ne s’agit pas de répéter ici ce que l’on trouve dans les éditions critiques ou annotées, mais d’essayer de répondre à des questions qui se posent au sujet des deux drames les plus célèbres de Victor Hugo : Hernani et Ruy Blas. Au-delà de l’empreinte des souvenirs espagnols de l’auteur, ne portent-ils pas la trace de ses lectures du théâtre espagnol, voire allemand ? Ne sont-ils pas des drames politiques plus qu’historiques, mais alors ne se prêtent-ils pas à des lectures différentes ? Ouvrent-ils la voie au réalisme ou exhibent-ils leur théâtralité ? En quoi consiste leur lyrisme ? Comment s’y manifeste l’ironie ? Le spectaculaire et le caché ne font-ils pas sens ? La destination scénique des textes n’impose-t-elle pas de tenir le plus grand compte de ce qui, dans les didascalies comme dans le dialogue, appelle une représentation ? Les articles successifs du plus fameux des combattants de la bataille d’Hernani, Gautier, témoignent-ils de l’entrée des deux drames dans l’histoire littéraire ou y contribuent-ils ? Quels débats la mise en scène de Ruy Blas par Vilar, devenue historique, a-t-elle soulevés ?
