Essai sur l'effet fantastique

Cet essai explore le processus de lecture des récits fantastiques, en particulier un phénomène souvent mentionné mais n’ayant jamais fait l’objet d’une véritable étude : l’effet fantastique. Cet effet de lecture très particulier qui se produit au contact de ces récits pour le moins étranges suppose, entre autres, que le lecteur perçoive les indéterminations du texte sans pour autant chercher à les résoudre. Cela amène à remettre en cause l’opinion largement répandue dans le domaine des théories de la lecture, voulant que la lecture soit un processus de détermination, de résolution de l’énigme. C’est donc une nouvelle approche du fantastique qui est présentée dans ce livre, qui accorde également une place importante à l’un des prolongements possibles de la lecture : l’interprétation du récit fantastique. La réflexion sur la notion d’indétermination, sur son rôle dans la lecture fantastique, repose en partie sur l’analyse de nouvelles de Guy de Maupassant et de Marie José Thériault. L’effet fantastique, supposant une progression rapide à travers le texte, l’existence d’un plaisir de l’indétermination ainsi que la présence de certains procédés, est examiné à partir de textes d’Edgar Allan Poe, de Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, de Prosper Mérimée, de Jean Ray et d’Anne Hébert. Enfin, plusieurs interprétations de « Ligeia » d’Edgar Allan Poe sont analysées, dans le but de rendre compte des différents aspects de la lecture critique du récit fantastique.
