La philosophie de Descartes est souvent associée à l’image d’une rationalité ascétique, fondée sur un exercice solitaire de la pensée, et hostile par principe aux passions humaines comme au sens commun. Cette image d’une rationalité hautaine, qui n’aurait rien à voir avec la tradition humaniste issue de la Renaissance, est celle que le présent ouvrage entend remettre en question. L’œuvre de Descartes s’y trouve éclairée par la problématique humaniste de la civilité et par son effort pour définir un moyen terme vertueux entre une censure ascétique de la nature humaine et un abandon à la spontanéité aveugle de la sensibilité. Dégager la perspective d’une « civilité de la raison cartésienne », c’est aussi s’efforcer de construire pour l’humanisme un fondement métaphysique et rationnel, lié tout à la fois à l’idée théologique d’une « bonne nature » et à une description phénoménologique de notre expérience du monde. Aussi s’agit-il de restituer non pas seulement le dessin doctrinal et argumentatif de la philosophie de Descartes, mais également la couleur et la vitalité associées aux tonalités éthiques et affectives d’une écriture à travers laquelle seule se délivre la conception cartésienne de la subjectivité.
