L’Essor du roman

Discours théorique et constitution d’un genre littéraire au XVIIe siècle

Grand siècle du roman par le nombre d’ouvrages publiés, le XVIIe siècle voit l’essor de ce genre en même temps que sa théorisation : des préfaces des Scudéry au Traité de l’origine des romans (1670) de Huet, des stratégies concertées visent à convaincre religieux, doctes et mondains de la valeur morale et pédagogique du roman ainsi que de sa soumission à des règles. Dans les années 1660, les modifications de la pratique romanesque s’accompagnent d’un renouveau de la réflexion théorique. Les mutations formelles sont alors mises au compte d’un changement de genre : le roman héroïque ou grand roman céderait la place à la nouvelle ou petit roman. À partir des années 1670, la séparation radicale entre les deux formes fait l’objet d’un consensus, bientôt systématisé par le traité de Du Plaisir (1683), inscrit dans l’histoire littéraire au XVIIIe siècle, puis définitivement enregistré par la critique moderne. Comment comprendre la relation qu’entretiennent poétique et pratique romanesques au XVIIe siècle ? Cet ouvrage se propose d’étudier la conception du roman durant tout le siècle à partir des discours formulés à son propos : préfaces, traités, articles ou lettres. Qu’ils attaquent, défendent ou codifient le roman, tous contribuent à l’instituer en genre littéraire.
