Jacques Lusseyran, entre cécité et lumière

Jacques Lusseyran (1924-1971), écrivain et essayiste aveugle, est aussi une figure méconnue de la Résistance intérieure française durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Restées longtemps ignorées dans son propre pays – alors qu’il a poursuivi une carrière de professeur de littérature dans plusieurs grandes universités américaines –, sa vie et son œuvre suscitent un intérêt grandissant dans la recherche française et internationale. Le succès du livre que lui a consacré Jérôme Garcin, Le Voyant (Gallimard, 2015, Folio, 2016), en est à la fois la cause et la manifestation. Cet ouvrage propose une vaste exploration de la vision intérieure paradoxale de Lusseyran qui, ayant perdu la vue à l’âge de 8 ans, s’est construit autour de la lumière et des couleurs dont il affirme garder la perception et qu’il magnifie par l’écriture. Les différentes approches historique, littéraire, philosophique, mais également scientifique (neuro-ophtalmologie), permettent ici d’étudier la place qu’il occupa au sein de la Résistance, l’attitude qu’il adopta face à la réalité tragique des camps de concentration (il fut déporté à Buchenwald), et d’interroger les catégories essentielles de son écriture – telle la synesthésie, qui concourt de manière exemplaire à l’élaboration d’un monde intérieur riche et poétique contrastant avec les représentations classiques de l’absence de vue comme privation et déficience. Le discours de la cécité chez Lusseyran est également confronté à celui d’autres écrivains aveugles contemporains, qui replacent son œuvre dans un réseau de références allant de l’Antiquité homérique à une écriture du quotidien marquée par une désacralisation de la non-vue en passant par la vision hugolienne de la cécité et de la mystique.
