Une carapace de plumes enfermant, dans sa roue motorisée, le corps d’une danseuse, d’énormes nanas en papier mâché à faire danser, une Bunny girl arpentant un terrain labouré en talons aiguilles, un guéridon dansant capable d’exprimer les tourments de l’âme, des corps réduits à l’état d’objets absurdement performants, une parole trop longtemps bridée devenue acte : autant de gestes « déplacés ». Ces artifices, ces attributs ostentatoires, ces débordements mécaniques, visibles tant chez Rebecca Horn, Niki de Saint Phalle et Pina Bausch que dans des pratiques performatives contemporaines, en exposant les ficelles du corps, témoignent d’une idéologie prégnante dans laquelle le féminin se voit bien souvent réifié. Ces figures du corps contraint ravivent, pour mieux les subvertir, des mythes tenaces relatifs à la grâce et à l’altérité qui hantent la littérature, les arts visuels et les arts vivants. Par l’analyse de ces œuvres grotesques et poétiques à la fois, cet essai nous invite, dans le sillage d’Aby Warburg et de Marcel Mauss, à percevoir le geste comme vecteur d'identité lié aux attentes sociales et politiques mais aussi aux mythes et aux fantasmes. Entre conformation à un idéal, incorporation des codes et résistance, les postures forcées, traversées de désirs contraires, révèlent alors, sous l’apparente soumission, leur capacité transformatrice. À l’encontre d’une illusoire liberté tant prônée par nos sociétés contemporaines, Anne Creissels engage, en traversant l’histoire et les disciplines, à penser le geste comme fondamentalement emprunté, condition paradoxale de sa métamorphose.
