L’histoire l’a baptisé Henri « le Navigateur » et pourtant l’infant Henrique (1394-1460) n’a quitté qu’en de rares occasions le petit promontoire de Sagres depuis lequel il donna pourtant le coup d’envoi, un demi-siècle avant Christophe Colomb, des Grandes Découvertes et fut le véritable initiateur de l’empire portugais. Que ce soit à la recherche du mythique royaume du Prêtre Jean ou pour trouver la source des fameux gisements d’or (le Soudan) dont le Portugal a tant besoin, Henri le Navigateur va financer et organiser dans les moindres détails des expéditions toujours plus loin vers le sud des côtes africaines. Le passage du cap Bojador en 1434 repousse les limites du monde connu, efface les peurs des marins et ouvre la route jusqu’en Sierra Leone à la mort de l’Infant. Trente ans plus tard, les caravelles portugaises dépassent le cap de Bonne-Espérance (1487) et s’ouvrent la route des merveilleuses richesses des Indes. Sous l’impulsion d’un homme visionnaire, les marins portugais viennent de changer la face du monde.
