« Plus j’avais combattu ses idées, ses projets, plus je m’étais attaché à ne lui prononcer que des paroles de paix, plus j’ai cru lui devoir de dévouement, quand tout ce que je lui avais en quelque sorte prédit est arrivé. » C’est par ces mots qu’Armand de Caulaincourt, duc de Vicence (1773-1827), conclut ses célèbres Mémoires et fait le bilan de ses années aux côtés de Napoléon. Officier de cavalerie originaire de la noblesse picarde, Caulaincourt est nommé grand écuyer de l’Empire en 1804. Napoléon le destine pourtant à une carrière de diplomate. Envoyé comme ambassadeur à Saint-Pétersbourg, il défend avec ferveur l’alliance franco-russe et s’oppose à la campagne de Russie. En vain. Confirmant ses prédictions, le désastre de la Bérézina en 1812 apparaît comme le fondement de son rôle politique durant les dernières années de l’Empire. Devenu pour l’opinion « l’homme de la paix » et nommé à la tête du ministère des Relations extérieures, il traite avec les coalisés lors des congrès de Prague (1813) et de Châtillon (1814), avant de négocier l’abdication de Napoléon. À travers le parcours de Caulaincourt, c’est le tableau de toute la diplomatie française de la fin de l’Empire que dépeint ici Olivier Varlan, des jeux d’influence aux confidences de l’Empereur.
