Théorie esthétique

Au siècle dernier, Theodor Adorno (1903-1969) s'impose comme l'un des rares penseurs à oser prendre parti en faveur de l'art moderne et des avant-gardes. Sans attendre prudemment la consécration que le temps finit parfois par accorder à des œuvres résolument nouvelles, le philosophe s'engage, dès 1923, dans les controverses artistiques, notamment musicales et littéraires, de l'entre-deux-guerres. C'est ainsi qu'il défend âprement contre ses détracteurs la nouvelle musique classique et les compositeurs Alban Berg, Arnold Schönberg et Anton von Webern. Il se fait l'avocat de James Joyce, de Paul Celan, de Samuel Beckett à qui il dédie la Théorie esthétique. Peu avant sa mort, en 1969, Adorno comprend, toutefois, que sa théorie de la modernité est confrontée au déclin de l'art moderne, à l'apparition de la postmodernité, au triomphe du kitsch et à la suprématie de l'industrie culturelle. Il craint que l'art lui-même ne survive dans la société actuelle que sous la forme d'une culture docile, entièrement soumise aux impératifs de la rentabilisation marchande. Tel est bien, quarante ans après la mort du philosophe, le défi majeur que doit relever une création artistique préoccupée par la sauvegarde de son autonomie et soucieuse de se définir encore comme espace de liberté.
