Cicéron

Cicéron (– 106 / – 43), avocat, théoricien de la parole, philosophe et homme politique, est connu pour ses plaidoiries (contre Verrès, Catilina ou Clodius), son éloquence qui a longtemps servi de modèle, ses discours politiques (les Philippiques) et sa participation aux derniers sursauts de la République romaine. Son œuvre philosophique, longtemps fréquentée entre autres par saint Augustin, Érasme, Montaigne, Gassendi et Voltaire, est, depuis le début du XIXe siècle, traitée comme une source documentaire : on lit Cicéron pour retrouver les stoïciens, les épicuriens et les néo-académiciens… Le but de ce livre est de faire (re)connaître le projet philosophique qui donne sa cohérence à l’ensemble de l’œuvre, de L’Orateur à La Divination, en passant notamment par La République, les Académiques, Des termes extrêmes des biens et des maux, les Tusculanes et La Nature des Dieux, de rouvrir des perspectives à ceux qui réfléchissent sur la parole publique, le politique et sur les règles éthiques qu’impose l’appartenance à une communauté de droit. Cicéron veut replacer au cœur de l’espace politique la philosophie – à Rome, retirée à l’ombre des écoles – et il fixe les conditions qui redonnent une légitimité au discours et à l’action politiques : philosophie pour le citoyen, pour l’homme concret, plongé dans la vie publique, devant ordonner ses idées et les communiquer par des mots propres à convaincre, qui juge toujours dans l’urgence avec peu ou pas de critères, philosophie sceptique, qui ne donne son approbation – sa notion clé – qu’après examen méthodique.
