Du tsar Alexandre Ier, son éternel rival, Napoléon en exil disait : « Il peut aller loin. Si je meurs ici, ce sera mon véritable héritier en Europe. » Napoléon est bien mort à Sainte-Hélène, en 1821 ; mais Alexandre le suivit dans la tombe dès 1825, à l’âge de quarante-huit ans. Et sa disparition brutale, survenue dans des circonstances troublantes, ajouta encore au mystère de celui que ses contemporains appelaient le « sphinx ». S’appuyant sur des archives jusque-là négligées et sur des documents inédits, cette biographie éclaire d’une lumière nouvelle le destin complexe d’Alexandre. Elle peint l’enfance du grand- duc, couvée et régie par sa grand-mère, Catherine II ; elle décrit son accession brutale au trône en 1801, à l’âge de vingt-trois ans ; les débuts brillants de son règne ; et surtout son duel avec Napoléon, qui culmine avec l’invasion de la Russie par la Grande Armée et l’incendie de Moscou en 1812. Sur l’échiquier titanesque qu’est alors l’Europe, le jeune tsar devient une pièce centrale. La gloire, pourtant, Alexandre en est las : à mesure que les années passent, son salut le préoccupe toujours plus. Une obsession qui prend d’étranges chemins, puisqu’il envoie à Rome, peu de temps avant de mourir, un émissaire secret au pape Léon XII. L’enquête de sa biographe montre que la tentation catholique a bien effleuré le tsar Alexandre... Est-il vraiment mort, d’ailleurs, en 1825 ? Le doute subsiste...
