À la rentrée de 1935, Albert Camus, porté par son « goût de la justice », adhère à ce qui deviendra l’année suivante le Parti communiste d’Algérie (PCA) et s’attache à la création d’une Maison de la Culture et du Théâtre du Travail. L’expérience, où il s’était promis de « garder les yeux ouverts », ne dépasse pas deux ans. Elle inspirera durablement la prévention de l’écrivain à l’égard de toutes formes de stalinisme. La compréhension de cet épisode est aujourd’hui profondément renouvelée par des documents et souvenirs inédits remontant aux acteurs directs, par le témoignage enfin publié de l’ancien dirigeant communiste Amar Ouzegane, par des archives en provenance du Komintern jusque-là inaccessibles, mais aussi par une relecture attentive de plusieurs écrits de Camus lui-même. On y vérifie que celui-ci a bien été écarté du PCA pour ne pas s’être résigné à la répression frappant les premiers nationalistes algériens issus de l’Étoile nord-africaine ; et qu’en ce temps de procès de Moscou, la mesure s’inscrit dans une longue série d’exclusions qui conduit à des règlements de comptes jusqu’après les massacres de 1945. On y redécouvre pourtant toute la vivacité de compagnonnages politiques et culturels qui, de manière parfois inattendue, se prolongent au sein de la Résistance algéroise, puis parmi les « Libéraux » de l’après-1954. Le trajet de Camus militant communiste interroge ainsi, tour à tour, les déconvenues du Front populaire, les impasses de la politique du PCF sur la question coloniale, le lien entre combats démocratiques, quête d’une culture méditerranéenne et attentes d’une algérianité pluraliste, en même temps qu’il côtoie « l’absurde et l’inutile » auxquels, face aux réalités d’appareil, s’expose un engagement sincère.
