La démocratie en armes

Le 12 juillet 1792, une Adresse aux Français, rédigée par l’Assemblée législative et placardée sur les murs de Paris, proclame « la Patrie en danger ». De partout l’ennemi converge vers Paris, Autrichiens, Prussiens, contre-révolutionnaires. L'Adresse décrit les bataillons ennemis comme « nombreux, soumis à une discipline rigoureuse, et depuis longtemps exercés dans l’art de la guerre ». Le peuple ne peut leur opposer qu’une « noble ardeur » enflammant son courage. Le 20 septembre, c’est à Valmy, sous la pluie, dans la boue, un engagement hasardeux, une canonnade incertaine mais le premier grand duel moderne d’artillerie. Les officiers français sont issus de l’armée nobiliaire du roi, la troupe est volontaire, issue des rangs du peuple. Ceux que l’on disait en proie à l’anarchie ont tenu, et contraint l’ennemi à rebrousser chemin. Jean-Pierre Bertaud, à partir d’un travail sans précédent dans les archives, a reconstitué ce petit peuple. Et montré pourquoi « de ce jour » Goethe datait « une nouvelle époque de l'histoire du monde » : premier moment de la guerre des peuples, des hommes du pays réel au cri de « Vive la Nation! », Valmy demeure à jamais « la démocratie en armes ».
