Correspondance, 1941-1957

Albert Camus et Francis Ponge se rencontrent pour la première fois à Lyon le 17 janvier 1943, en compagnie du journaliste Pascal Pia, leur ami commun. Le Parti pris des choses a paru quelques mois plus tôt, en même temps que L'Étranger. Mais Francis Ponge a lu le manuscrit du Mythe de Sisyphe dès août 1941 et, y trouvant un écho inespéré à ses propres interrogations sur l'absurde, aspire dès lors à se rapprocher de son cadet. Deux conceptions du monde se reconnaissent sœurs et s'accordent alors pour se nourrir de leurs différences, sans que soit jamais occulté ce qui les distingue au plan de l'idéologie, de l'esthétique et du tempérament. Ces lettres, que les deux écrivains échangent principalement entre 1943 et 1945, laissent ainsi entrevoir ce que fut leur amitié, si vive et justifiée en même temps que très tôt « endormie », et jamais vraiment ressuscitée. Pour Francis Ponge, elles constituent un moment essentiel de sa réflexion sur son propre travail, lui permettant de « mieux penser ce qu'il pense », alors même qu'il s'impose comme le poète d'un certain objectivisme. À Albert Camus, isolé un temps dans une convalescence prolongée près de Saint-Étienne, elles offrent une magnifique occasion de lutter contre les circonstances négatives, de reprendre des forces dans la chaleur d'une amitié nouvelle, dans les plaisirs de l'échange et de la confrontation intellectuelle. De là, ce brillant dialogue entre deux hommes pareillement soucieux des lendemains et dont l'influence sur la vie intellectuelle et morale de l'après-guerre sera décisive.
