Correspondance, 1945-1959

Albert Camus et Louis Guilloux font connaissance chez Gallimard durant l’été 1945, à l'instigation de leur ami commun Jean Grenier. Guilloux a déjà derrière lui deux décennies d'engagement et d'écriture et une œuvre publiée importante. Camus, dont L'Étranger et Le Mythe de Sisyphe ont paru en 1942, n'a que trente-deux ans ; son implication dans Combat lui vaut une notoriété grandissante. Les différences ne manquent pas entre le Breton et l'Algérien. Camus semble plus solaire, Guilloux plus habité par le noir ; le premier est rongé par le doute et le second aspire à la lumière. Mais l'amitié entre les deux hommes est immédiate et durable, et leurs affinités nombreuses : « Je l'aime tendrement et je l'admire, écrira Guilloux en 1952, non seulement pour son grand talent, mais pour sa tenue dans la vie. » Ces fils du peuple, qui ont connu la pauvreté et la maladie, sont animés par l'esprit de justice et de fraternité, prenant le parti des malheureux et des opprimés sans jamais s'inféoder à une organisation qui voudrait les représenter. Tous deux partagent une conscience aiguë de la douleur, où ils reconnaissent la « constante justification » de l'homme et dont ils tirent les éléments d'une conduite morale et politique. Cette correspondance croisée ponctue quinze années d'une profonde et tendre affection, nourrie d'innombrables causeries, lectures, promenades et repas partagés. Comme toute amitié, elle eut ses temps forts, telle la visite de Camus à Saint-Brieuc en 1947, durant laquelle le futur auteur du Premier Homme va sur la tombe de son père, enterré au carré des soldats de la Grande Guerre ; ou encore le séjour de Guilloux en 1948 en Algérie, où il partage un repas avec Camus et sa mère.
