De 1911, date à laquelle il entama ses études de philosophie, jusqu’à la veille de sa mort en 1951, Ludwig Wittgenstein entretint une abondante correspondance avec des philosophes fort célèbres, et d’autres moins connus, ainsi qu’avec de grands intellectuels. De ses maîtres en logique des années 1910, Gottlob Frege et Bertrand Russell, à ses collègues, élèves et disciples des années de Cambridge, en passant par les économistes John Maynard Keynes ou Piero Sraffa ou l’architecte Paul Engelmann, l’ouvrage regroupe l’ensemble de ces échanges. Au fil de cette riche activité épistolaire se découvre un penseur désavouant l’esprit de système sur lequel il avait d’abord misé, ne cessant de remettre sur le métier ses questions en vue d’un livre toujours resté à venir, et convaincu que seule la discussion philosophique peut instruire dans le courage de la pensée. Sa correspondance dévoile aussi un intellectuel partageant avec George Edward Moore une véritable passion pour la musique, se nourrissant de littérature à travers un très large éventail de lectures, et attentif à la découverte freudienne. Elle révèle enfin un homme d’une intransigeance totale, aussi bien à l’égard de lui-même qu’à l’égard de ses proches, mais doté d’un bel humour pince-sans-rire. La personnalité de Wittgenstein autant que sa démarche philosophique s’éclairent ainsi d’un jour inattendu.
