La guerre entre l’Allemagne nazie et l’Union soviétique, le plus grand théâtre d’opérations de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, fut élevée au rang de mythe par Staline au prix d’innombrables mensonges. Cet ouvrage rassemble les témoignages récents de vétérans de cette « Grande Guerre patriotique », ainsi que les Russes l’appellent encore aujourd’hui. En 1941, ces témoins étaient des citoyens ordinaires. Ils racontent l’horreur de ce conflit et écornent l’image du « peuple héros » : les collaborateurs, délateurs et tortionnaires au service des nazis, l’irresponsabilité, l’alcoolisme, le vol généralisé, le mépris de la vie du soldat, la réalité des viols de masse commis en Allemagne. Pourtant, même au milieu du pire, ils ont croisé des hommes et des femmes dont le courage et l’humanité leur ont permis de supporter des épreuves inimaginables en Occident. Après la guerre, certains témoins ont choisi la dissidence, d’autres ont été marginalisés parce qu’ils étaient juifs, la majorité s’est réinsérée dans le système soviétique. Aujourd’hui, presque tous ont rompu avec le mythe de la Grande Guerre patriotique et sont parvenus à faire le tri entre la gloire et l’infamie, le massacre et le sacrifice, l’héroïsme et la survie.
